A mystery symbol is a tile that hides what it is until the reels stop. Every mystery tile on that spin then turns into the same paying symbol, and the spin is paid as if that symbol had landed in those places. If you want the wider picture first, start with how slot machines build a spin, then come back for the details here.

What a mystery symbol does, step by step

The sequence is the same in most titles, and knowing it tells you what to look for on the screen.

  1. The reels spin and one or more mystery tiles land among the normal symbols.
  2. The reels stop, and the game picks a single symbol for that spin.
  3. Every mystery tile flips to that symbol at the same moment.
  4. The game checks the grid for lines, ways or clusters and pays them.

The pick is made by the game’s maths, not by anything you press, so no stake size or timing changes it. What you control is the title, the stake and when you stop.

Four mystery symbol variants

Studios use the idea in different shapes. These four cover most of what you meet, and each one is worded differently in a paytable.

  1. Plain reveal. Single tiles land anywhere and all flip to one symbol. The reveal can pick a low or a high symbol.
  2. Stacked reveal. The mystery tiles arrive in stacks on a reel, so one reveal can fill a whole reel with the same symbol.
  3. Expanding reveal. A tile that lands grows to cover its reel or a block of positions before it flips.
  4. Reveal with a multiplier. The revealed symbol, or the win it makes, carries a multiplier shown in the paytable.

A title can combine two of these. Read the feature list rather than guessing from the artwork.

Mystery symbol vs wild vs scatter

The three are easy to mix up because all of them are special tiles. They do different jobs, and the table shows where each job starts and ends.

TileWhen it actsWhat it does
Mystery symbolAfter the reels stopTurns into one ordinary symbol, which then pays normally
WildDuring the win checkStands in for other symbols to finish a line, way or cluster
ScatterDuring the win checkCounts by number anywhere on the grid, often to start a feature round

Wilds usually do not replace scatters, and a mystery symbol follows whatever rule the game gives the symbol it becomes. The glossary page on the wild symbol meaning in the glossary shows how widely a wild’s behaviour varies between games.

A named example from this site’s data

PG Soft’s Treasures of Aztec is the one title in this site’s data that lists the idea: its feature list includes mystery symbols upgrading to wild, on a 6-reel, 5-row grid with up to 32,400 ways. You can read the full figures on the Treasures of Aztec reference page. Note the wording: the mystery tile is described as upgrading to a wild, which is a different outcome from flipping to a paying picture symbol.

Where to read it on a paytable

Every game states its own version, so the paytable is the only reliable source.

  1. Open the game’s info or paytable screen from the menu.
  2. Find the symbol page and look for a tile with a question mark or a plain card back.
  3. Read the line that says what it can turn into, and whether every tile turns into the same symbol.
  4. Check the feature pages for a multiplier or an expanding rule attached to the reveal.
Problem

You cannot find a mystery symbol on the paytable

Fix

The title probably does not use one. Many features that change symbols are something else, such as a wild upgrade or a marked spot.

Features that look similar but are not

Two other slice titles show how a studio words a symbol-changing feature without a mystery symbol. Read what PG Soft’s page lists for Pinata Wins: Gold Framed symbols with multipliers up to x100. And read how Pragmatic Play words Sugar Rush 1000: winning spots are marked, and a multiplier starts at x2 and doubles to x1,024 when another win lands on the same spot. Neither studio page calls these mystery symbols, so this site does not either.

FAQ

Is a mystery symbol the same as a wild?

No. A wild stands in for other symbols to complete a line or cluster. A mystery symbol is a tile that becomes one ordinary symbol after the reels stop, and that symbol then pays on its own terms.

Do all mystery symbols on a spin turn into the same symbol?

In the usual design, yes: one reveal applies to every mystery tile on that spin. Games differ, so open the paytable or info screen of the title you play and read how it words the reveal.

Can I tell what a mystery symbol will become before the reels stop?

No. The reveal happens after the stop, and nothing on the grid predicts it. What you can read beforehand is the paytable, which lists the symbols the reveal can pick from.
