A shoe is the open-topped dealing box that holds several decks of cards shuffled together and slides one card out at a time. If you watch a baccarat or blackjack table run by live casino dealers, the dealer is pulling every card from that box. This page explains what the box holds, what the cut card does and what a new shoe changes.
Shoe meaning at a card table
The word comes from the shape of the box. One published blackjack source describes the shoe as a dispenser that holds large stacks of cards in multi-deck games, placed to the dealer’s left, with a discard tray to the dealer’s right. The same source lists the usual blackjack variants as single deck, double deck, 4 deck, 6 deck or 8 deck.
Plain arithmetic gives the size of a shoe. One deck has 52 cards, so:
- 6 decks is 6 x 52 = 312 cards.
- 8 decks is 8 x 52 = 416 cards.
Roulette and sic bo have no shoe. They use a wheel and dice, so the shoe only matters at card tables.
How many decks a card shoe holds
A published casino rulebook for baccarat sets six to eight decks, and says the decks used at a table are changed after each shoe. A published card-games reference says baccarat is typically played with 8 decks offline and more commonly 6 decks online.
| Game | Decks per saved source | Cards at that size |
|---|---|---|
| Baccarat | Six to eight (a casino rulebook) | 312 to 416 |
| Blackjack | One to eight (a card-games reference) | 52 to 416 |
| Evolution Power Blackjack | Eight, with 9s and 10s removed (Evolution’s own page) | 416 - 64 = 352 |
Evolution’s own page for Power Blackjack says each of its eight decks has the 9s and 10s taken out, which leaves 64 cards fewer in the shoe. The check: each deck has four 9s and four 10s, so 8 x 8 = 64.
The cut card and the reshuffle
After the shuffle, a cut card is placed into the stack. The baccarat rulebook says it goes at least a deck in from either end, and the sequence runs like this:
- The cut card appears in the cards being dealt.
- The dealer finishes the hand in play.
- The dealer announces the last hand and plays one more.
- New decks replace the old ones.
For blackjack, the published rulebook says the shoe is reshuffled after the cut card is reached. A card-games reference describes the same idea: when the cut card is reached, the next deal is the final one before a shuffle. The same reference notes that baccarat played on a computer is shuffled after every hand, with no burn cards or cut card.
A worked example for a baccarat shoe of 8 decks: the cut card sits at least 52 cards from the end, so the dealer can deal at most 416 - 52 = 364 cards before the last hand, and often fewer.
Why the card shoe matters in baccarat and blackjack
Cards leave the shoe and stay out until the reshuffle, so what remains does change slightly. Take a fresh 8-deck shoe with 32 aces among 416 cards. The chance the first card is an ace is 32 in 416, about 7.69%.
If the first card out is an ace, the chance the next is also an ace is 31 in 415, about 7.47%. That small shift is why baccarat house edges differ a little by deck count: a card-games reference lists the Tie bet at 14.44% with 6 decks and 14.36% with 8 decks, against Banker at 1.06% and Player at 1.24% on both. The tie is the costly one.
Pair side bets use the same arithmetic. You can read how a side bet is priced for the full working.
What a new shoe changes, and what it does not
Use this list when a table seems to be in a pattern.
- A new shoe resets the cards left to a full set of decks.
- It does not change the rules, the payouts or the commission on a Banker win.
- It does not make the next hand more likely to go to Player, Banker or a tie.
- Past hands shown on a scoreboard are a record, not a forecast, because the next hand comes from a shuffled shoe.
- The only thing you control is the stake, so set it before you sit down.
If you spin the wheel instead, the same logic holds. Look at roulette payouts bet by bet to see how a fixed wheel prices every bet.
Evolution live baccarat and blackjack shoes
Evolution’s own pages for its live tables describe baccarat and blackjack with a dealer drawing cards at a table streamed from a studio. A published odds analysis of Evolution’s blackjack side bets assumes eight decks, which is 416 cards. For the studio background, see the Evolution studio row. Each table has its own help screen, so open it to confirm the deck count.
FAQ
What is the shoe meaning in baccarat?
The shoe is the dealing box that holds six to eight shuffled decks. The dealer draws each card from it, and a cut card marks where the shoe ends and a reshuffle begins.
Does a new shoe change my odds?
Only by a very small amount, because the cards left in the shoe change as cards are dealt. A fresh shoe does not make Player, Banker or any other result more likely on the next hand.
Sino ang may hawak ng cut card?
The cut card is placed in the stack by a player or the dealer after the shuffle, and the dealer announces the last hand when it appears. On a live stream the dealer handles it, so you only watch for the announcement.
