Safe browsing is a setting in your phone’s browser that checks each address against a list of risky pages and shows a red screen before the page loads. It takes under a minute to switch on, and it is one of the seven checks in the legit site checklist. The steps below use the menu names from Google’s and Apple’s own help pages.
Safe browsing in five steps
Follow these in order. Steps 1 to 3 are Chrome, step 4 is Safari, and step 5 is what you do when the warning appears.
- On your Android device, open Chrome, then tap More and Settings. On an iPhone or iPad, the same two taps apply in the Chrome app.
- Tap Privacy and security, then tap Safe Browsing.
- Select Enhanced protection or Standard protection. Avoid No protection.
- If you use Safari on iPhone, open Settings, then Apps, then Safari, and turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.
- If a warning page appears, read it, go back, and type the address you meant yourself.
Safe browsing in Chrome on Android
Google’s help page for Android gives this route exactly.
- Open Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Privacy and security, then Safe Browsing.
- Select the level you want.
You can return to the same screen any time to change it. Chrome checks with Safe Browsing each time you visit a website or attempt a download, based on the level you picked.
Safe browsing in Chrome on iPhone and iPad
The route on Apple devices is the same words in the same order.
- Open Chrome on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Privacy and security, then Safe Browsing.
- Select Enhanced protection, Standard protection or No protection.
Which Chrome level to pick
Google’s help page names three levels.
| Level | What Google’s page says | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced protection | Security from known and potential new dangers | Anyone who logs in to money pages |
| Standard protection | Security from known dangers; the default | Anyone who wants the default |
| No protection | Not recommended; no protection against dangerous sites, downloads and extensions | Nobody on a gaming or wallet page |
Safari’s Fraudulent Website Warning on iPhone
Apple’s iPhone guide lists the switch under Settings, Apps, Safari. It tells Safari to show a warning when you visit a suspected phishing website. Apple adds that the option is not available in all countries or regions.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.
Apple’s privacy page says Safari may send information calculated from the website address to Google Safe Browsing and Apple, and that the actual address is never shared with the provider.
What the red warning screen means
A red screen is the browser telling you the address is on a list of risky pages. Google’s page names the headline “Dangerous site” and the families of pages behind it.
| Wording you may see | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Dangerous site | Phishing, malware, unwanted software or social engineering |
| Did you mean, Is this the right site, or Fake site ahead | The address looks like one you know but is slightly different |
Google recommends you do not visit a page that shows the red warning. If you still want to see it, Chrome offers Details and then Visit this unsafe site on a computer, but nothing on a gaming page is worth that.
The red screen appears on an address a friend sent you for a gaming lobby.
Go back, delete the message, and type the lobby’s address yourself. Then read the phishing website signs to see what the copy was doing.
What safe browsing cannot catch
A warning list only knows pages that someone has already found. A brand new copy may load without any warning, so the setting is a net with holes, not a guarantee.
| Situation | What still protects you |
|---|---|
| A copy nobody has reported yet | Reading the address bar yourself |
| A real page asking for odd things | Never sharing a code or password |
| A brand that is on no list | The registered brand list check on PAGCOR’s lists |
