Roulette payouts follow one rule: the more pockets a bet covers, the less it pays, and the pay is set so every bet costs about the same. This page lists each payout next to the real chance of winning, on a 37-pocket and a 38-pocket wheel, with the working. It is one of the table pages that sit under the live casino dealers pillar, and every figure is arithmetic you can redo.
Roulette payouts for every bet type
A published casino rulebook sets the minimum payout odds for each bet. The chance column is plain division: pockets covered over pockets on the wheel.
| Bet | Pockets covered | Pays | Win chance, 37 pockets | Win chance, 38 pockets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | 1 | 35 to 1 | 1/37 = 2.70% | 1/38 = 2.63% |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 | 2/37 = 5.41% | 2/38 = 5.26% |
| Street (three numbers) | 3 | 11 to 1 | 3/37 = 8.11% | 3/38 = 7.89% |
| Corner (four numbers) | 4 | 8 to 1 | 4/37 = 10.81% | 4/38 = 10.53% |
| Line (six numbers) | 6 | 5 to 1 | 6/37 = 16.22% | 6/38 = 15.79% |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2 to 1 | 12/37 = 32.43% | 12/38 = 31.58% |
| Even-money (red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18, 19 to 36) | 18 | 1 to 1 | 18/37 = 48.65% | 18/38 = 47.37% |
The same rulebook also lists a first-five bet (0, 00, 1, 2 and 3) paying 6 to 1, which exists only on a double-zero wheel.
How a payout is worked out
Follow one bet through, using a 100 peso straight bet on a single-zero wheel.
- The bet wins on 1 pocket in 37, so the chance of winning is 1/37.
- A win pays 35 to 1: 35 x 100 = 3,500 pesos, plus your 100 back.
- A loss happens on the other 36 pockets, so the chance of losing is 36/37 and you lose 100 pesos.
- The average result per spin is (1/37 x 3,500) - (36/37 x 100) = 94.59 - 97.30 = a loss of 2.70 pesos.
- That is 2.70 pesos on a 100 peso stake, or 2.70%, the house edge.
Try the same working on a dozen bet. It wins 12 times in 37 and pays 2 to 1, so the average is (12/37 x 200) - (25/37 x 100) = 64.86 - 67.57 = a loss of 2.70 pesos. Every bet comes out at 1/37 because a bet covering n pockets pays (36 - n) / n to 1.
Single-zero wheel against double-zero wheel
A university honors thesis on roulette from UNLV works the same sum for both wheels. On a wheel with 38 pockets, a red bet wins 18 in 38 and loses 20 in 38, so the edge is 2/38, about 5.26%. On the European wheel, 18 in 37 against 19 in 37 gives about 2.7%.
| Wheel | Pockets | Edge on a standard bet | Working |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single zero | 37 | 2.70% | 1/37 |
| Double zero | 38 | 5.26% | 2/38 |
| Double zero, first-five bet | 38 | 7.89% | 3/38 |
The first-five bet covers 5 pockets and pays 6 to 1, so the average is (5/38 x 600) - (33/38 x 100) = 78.95 - 86.84 = a loss of 7.89 pesos per 100. The thesis gives about 7.8% for this bet.
The rulebook also covers zero on even-money bets. On a double-zero wheel it lets a licensee take either the whole stake or one-half when the ball lands on 0 or 00, and on a single-zero wheel those bets lose. Evolution’s own page for French Roulette says its La Partage rule returns half of an even-money bet when the ball lands on zero, which halves the cost on those bets to 0.5/37, about 1.35%.
Where Evolution tables change the payouts
Evolution’s own page for Lightning Roulette says the wheel has the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero and that a non-multiplied straight-up bet pays 29 to 1. The page says splits, corners, red, black and dozens pay the same as standard roulette. Between one and five Lucky Numbers get random multipliers of 50x to 500x on straight-up bets.
A straight pays 29 instead of 35 when no multiplier lands, so the cost of that bet depends on the multipliers as well as the base pay. Open the game’s info screen and read its paytable before betting. For the idea behind a cost expressed per peso staked, see the RTP meaning behind these edges.
Read the layout before you bet
Use this check on any roulette table, live or on screen.
- Count the zeros on the wheel: one means 37 pockets, two means 38.
- Find the paytable or help screen and compare each payout with the table above.
- Look for a first-five or similar bet on a double-zero layout and note its higher edge.
- Work out your stake per spin before the countdown starts, and keep to it.
A side wager is priced differently from these bets, and the side bet cost per peso page shows how. Cards work differently again: see the blackjack ace value and soft hands page for a game where decisions change the edge, which they cannot at roulette.
FAQ
What do roulette payouts mean when it says 35 to 1?
It means you win 35 times your stake and also keep the stake. A winning 100 peso straight bet is paid 3,500 pesos and your 100 pesos stays on the table, a return of 3,600.
Do bigger roulette payouts mean a better bet?
No. Each bet is paid in line with how few pockets it covers, so the expected loss is the same on a single-zero wheel: 1 in 37 of every peso staked, whichever bet you pick.
Ano ang pinagkaiba ng single-zero at double-zero wheel?
A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets and a house edge of 1 in 37, or 2.70%. A double-zero wheel has 38 pockets and an edge of 2 in 38, or 5.26%, on most bets.
